Personal History:

Knuckles the Echidna was born in Mobius’s ancient past. However, it is left unclear how he came to be in the present, or what happened to the other Echidna, Sonic assumes however that Knuckles was somehow put into suspended animation and it's possible others were too.

In the present, Knuckles believes that his people fled and left him behind to guard the Floating Island and the seven Chaos Emeralds until their return. But the Island has fallen into a state of disrepair because six of the Chaos Emeralds had been split in two, making Thirteen emeralds in all; and six of the emerald halves had been lost at an unknown time, meaning the Island didn't have enough power for all its defenses. Including Knuckles himself, who lost his memories due to being resurrected during this time.

When Robotnik crashed on the Island in his Death Egg, Knuckles hoped that the fallen satellite contained his people returning at last. Instead, he found Doctor Robotnik, an evil dictator who ruled all the land below the island, tangled in machinery and in need of help. Being totally unused to being around another person Knuckles told Robotnik about the island and the six broken Chaos Emeralds that held it up in the air. Robotnik, in turn, told Knuckles that he too had once had his own set of Chaos Emeralds halves, although he hadn’t known they were just halves at the time. He didn’t have them anymore however because they had been stolen by Sonic the Hedgehog, who, Robotnik had explained, was a terrorist set upon destroying his "peaceful empire".
So they made a deal, Knuckles would let Robotnik fix his space station (Actually the Death Egg) and help him against Sonic, and Robotnik would give Knuckles the six emeralds that Sonic had stolen.

Sonic did indeed come to the island, and captured Robotnik, just as the Doctor and Echidna had planned. Robotnik had a tracking device that allowed Knuckles to find Robotnik in Sonic’s secret base, under the Emerald Hill Zone. When Knuckles rescued him Robotnik had already forced Sonic to give him the emeralds by grabbing another “Rebel” Porker Lewis though the bars and holding him hostage.

Once back on the island Robotnik used a machine to merge the twelve chaos emeralds back into six, and furthermore, started to transfer the chaos energy into himself. Knuckles stopped this, by revealing that he himself had had the seventh Emerald all along, and used it to strip Robotnik of the stolen chaos energy and send him back to the surface of Mobius. Sonic, and his sidekick Tails, had walked in on this and asked Knuckles to join the fight against Robotnik. Knuckles refused, saying that Sonic's war was none of his concern, and it was his duty to guard the Island until his people returned. He did, however, come to Sonic’s aid when Robotnik attacked the hedgehog’s base because it was his fault that Robotnik had found it. Afterward he returned to the Island saying that they were even.

Yet Knuckles would be dragged into that war no matter what his wishes, Robotnik’s Death Egg was still in the Launch Base Zone waiting for Robotnik to repair it, something Sonic would not allow, and the echidna was caught in the middle trying to keep them both off the island. Knuckles and Sonic fighting each other as much as they were fighting Robotnik worked in the doctor’s favour; giving him the time he needed to fix the Death Egg. Yet when faced with the horrific weapon, Knuckles and Sonic finally managed to work together and beat him.
At the end of the fight, Sonic had the Master Emerald and Robotnik had sworn to kill the population of the Emerald Hill Zone, who had sheltered Sonic in the past. So Knuckles was forced to make another deal. Sonic would give Knuckles the Master Emerald if Knuckles let the Emerald Hill Folk hide from Robotnik on the island, Knuckles agreed.

Later Knuckles found himself in the Special Zone and attacked by the Chaotix. A team assembled by the Omni-Viewer, an intelligent computer who was once a slave to Robotnik. The team, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Mighty the Armadillo, and Charmy the Bee believed Knuckles was still working for Robotnik, But when the Omni-Viewer is kidnapped he proves his worth by helping them save him.

Knuckles had never seen another of his own kind until he found Dr. Zachary on the island. Knuckles was so surprised and excited that he showed the old echidna around the island, the same mistake he made with Robotnik, And Zachary was just as evil. He almost caused the destruction of the Island and the death of everyone on it, luckily Knuckles was able to undo the damage. Although Zachary wasn’t finished, when an incident with a group of Pirates left Knuckles stranded on the surface of Mobius, Zachary lead Robotnik right to the Emerald Hill Folk who were still living on the island in the Mushroom Hill Zone.
In the resulting battle, Robotnik was defeated both on the island and on Mobius' surface leaving the world safe enough for the Emerald Hill Folk to return home. Although Porker Lewis remained, fascinated by ancient Echidna technology and willing to help Knuckles repair it.

Knuckles still helped the freedom fighters when needed though, and was helping Porker run tests on the chaos energy readings of a strange water monster that had killed his friend Johnny Lightfoot before waking up on the train.

Personality: Knuckles used to have a very narrow viewpoint, to him nothing nothing was more important to him than the Floating Island and the Chaos Emeralds. Even though he believed Robotnik's story of being a good guy he still never told him that he had the seventh emerald all along.

But he also has a strong moral code. He helps Robotnik when he first meets him, even when he has no reason too. Although this could also be because Dr Robotnik is the first living thing he's ever met, which also explains why he was so trusting. Yet even after the doctor's betrayal and, knowing that Robotnik would kill him in a heartbeat given half the chance, he doesn't kill Robotnik when stripping him of the Chaos Emerald's power in “The Power of the Chaos Emeralds,” in fact he sends him home. And he still doesn't kill him in a later story "Village of the Damned" even though Knuckles was very nearly burned alive by his brainwashed villagers.

He helped Sonic escape Robotnik in “Robotnik's Revenge” because it was his fault that the dictator had found his secret base under the Emerald Hill Zone. And most telling, he allows the Emerald Hill Folk to hide on his island, knowing Robotnik would never let them escape his wrath for sheltering Sonic in the first place. Although Sonic seems to have forced him into this, he doesn’t look annoyed at the sudden influx of people. This is a huge development for him, showing that he's almost as dedicated to his moral code as he is to his duty as Guardian.

This doesn't mean he's nice. He keeps throwing Sonic, and the other freedom fighters off his island. Even when he knows they are only there to fight Robotnik, right up until the final attack on the death egg. And even after he's become more tolerant of Sonic he still dislikes his arrogance, impatience, and glory-seeking. And he doesn't keep his dislike a secret.

But having chosen a side he’s unerringly loyal to the people he’s thrown in with. In “The Revenge of Trogg” he plays along with Tail's deception, the fox told his family that he was the Hero of Mobius instead of Sonic, both because he liked finding a Zone that didn't worship Sonic and to keep Tails out of trouble. In “The monster Wakes” he happily offers to help Amy, who was leading the Freedom fighters at that time, even though he was trying to get back to the Island.

And Knuckles starts becoming fast friends with Porker Lewis over time as they appear in many strips together, even allowing the pig to stay on the Island with him after all the other Emerald Hill Folk have gone home.

What else Knuckles is, while on the island and after Robotnik's betrayal, is very untrusting of everyone, with a few exceptions. One was Dr. Zachary who he trusted just because he was an echidna, Knuckles was so excited meeting one of his own kind at last that he didn't even think that he could be evil. After being betrayed by him Knuckles swears to be less trustful of even his own kind in the future.

However, when off the island he is rather naïve due to his lack of social interaction this is most telling in “Village of the Damned” where anyone else would have been able to tell that the village was no a safe place to rest. And even as he jumps out of a window to save a girl, who's screaming for help no less, he's worried that he might be making a fool of himself and interrupting some kind of festival, in his defense, the people taking the girl away are dressed up in festival costumes and the whole thing looked a little like a parade.

And yet, in “The good the bad and the Echidna” Knuckles quickly picks up on who might be really trying to kill “The Good” and framing him for the failed attempts. This could be Knuckles becoming more socialised over time, or the fact he is in a prison cell kick-starting his usual untrusting behaviour

In the end what Knuckles is, is dedicated, while unlike Sonic he won't go looking for trouble, and in fact he likes it when things are quiet and he can have a peaceful life, he'd would rather die than fail in his duty, this is shown no less than three times in the comic, in “Homecoming” he chooses to stay on the island instead of gliding to safety but was saved when he had last Second brainwave.
When he couldn't bring himself to destroy the last trace of the Kohenyu in “The Graveyard” in order to make a new Master Emerald he thought they would kill him, thankfully they had a change of heart.
In the Chaos Arc Knuckles ejects the emeralds from the Island in order to keep them from Chaos. Thus dooming the island to a watery grave, this is the closest Knuckles came to actually becoming suicidal instead of just letting himself be killed. Amy Rose and Porker Lewis have to hit him over the head and drag him off the island before it crashed into the sea and sunk. And while he does recover from that suicidal state, and even thanks Amy for knocking some sense into him, he becomes obsessed with getting the Emeralds back.
So even after all his Character Development and learning to understand and even befriend people, the core of his character will always be defined by his duty.

CRAU developments: n/a

Key themes: Trust friendship duty and loyalty

Main Motivation: Protecting his island, the emeralds, and the weak.

Skills:
Knuckles' abilities aren't really given a definite upper limit, it's mentioned more than once that he could glide the whole way down from the Island if he wanted to.

He has punched an entire section off the Floating Island once by punching a fault line. However, there is a cannon limit to his digging strength, while rock, earth, and robots are no obstacle to him he was unable to dig his away out of his cell in “The Good the Bad and the Echidna” because of how thick the steel floor was.

He also doesn't seem to be bothered by the blistering heat of the Lava Reef Zone or the Freezing cold of the Ice Cap Zone, and he can take a lot of punishment before getting tired.

While Knuckles is not known for his brains he is not stupid. He doesn't tell Robotnik he has the “Lost” Emerald until he as all the emeralds in the comic (13 at that point.) He then uses the Grey Emerald to stop Robotnik's plans and remove him from the island this is a trick that actually worked because of Knuckles' naïvety.
That same naïvety means Knuckles is not good at spotting lies, however, because of that people don't believe he can lie either. The best example is in the paragraph above where like lied to Robotnik, but he also tricked “The Bad” to confessing in “The Good the Bad and the Echidna.”

He can also be surprisingly empathic, twice he's talked his enemies down rather than beating them in a fight. In “The Graveyard” he surrendered to The Spirit of the Herd because he couldn't bring himself to destroy the last trace of the Kohenyu, the Spirit spared him. And in “Root's” he talked a forest of intelligent trees out of trying to kill everyone in revenge for the murder of the Elder tree.

Knuckles' dedication to his Duty is also a strength, it's not very often he has to stop and ask himself if he's doing the right thing. (But when he does it can lead to near-fatal hesitation)

(The following powers are not relevant to the game but I'm listing them here so if they do somehow become relevant it doesn't look like I'm pulling new powers out of thin air.)

When in possession of the Grey/Seventh/Control Emerald he can control the others, Transferring power to and from people (The Power of the Chaos Emeralds & Showdown) and Teleportation (The power of the Chaos Emeralds)
In “Showdown” he undone the damage Robotnik did while re-writing reality although it's never explained if Knuckles restored reality himself or if it was a side effect of stripping Robotnik of his power.
