Knuckles the Echidna was born in Mobius’ ancient past. While it is left unclear in STC how he came to be in the present, or what happened to the other Echidna, STC-O* canon explains that all the Echidna race save for Knuckles and Tikal were either killed or captured by the Drakons, an attacking empire from another dimension. Tikal survived because her spirit was sealed away with Chaos while Knuckles,a solider at the time, was made an immortal to guard the Emeralds thanks to a deal with Vichama, a god of death, who resurrects Knuckles each time he dies, be it though old age or battle.
(*Sonic the Comic – Online is a webcomic that was started as a continuation of the original STC, I do not intend to update knuckles past the end of the official comic but the official comic never fully explained how Knuckles could exist in both the past and present, although it did hinted that he was somehow put in stasis, if using STC-O's explination is not allowed just let me know and I play him as if he was placed in stasis instead.)

In the present, Knuckles believes that his people fled and left him behind to guard the Floating Island and the seven Chaos Emeralds until their return. The Island however has fallen into a state of disrepair because six of the seven Chaos Emeralds had been split in two, making Thirteen emeralds in all; and six of the emerald halves had been lost at an unknown time, meaning the Island didn't have enough power for all it's defences, including Knuckles himself, who lost his memories due to being resurrected either during or after this incident.

When Robotnik crashed on the Island in his Death Egg, Knuckles hoped that the fallen satellite contained his people returning at last. Instead he found Doctor Robotnik, an evil dictator who ruled all the land below the island, tangled in machinery and in need of help. Being totally unused to being around another person Knuckles told Robotnik about the island and the six broken Chaos Emeralds that held it up in the air. Robotnik in turn told Knuckles that he too had once had his own set of Chaos Emeralds halves, although he hadn’t known they were just halves at the time. He didn’t have them any more however because they had been stolen by Sonic the hedgehog who, Robotnik had explained, was a terrorist set upon destroying his "peaceful empire".
So they made a deal, Knuckles would let Robotnik fix is Death Egg and help him against Sonic, and Robotnik would give Knuckles the six emeralds that Sonic had stolen.

Sonic did indeed come to the island, and captured Robotnik, just as the Doctor and Echidna had planned. Robotnik had a tracking device which allowed Knuckles to find Robotnik in Sonic’s secret base, under the Emerald Hill Zone. When Knuckles rescued him Robotnik had already forced Sonic to give him the emeralds by grabbing another “Rebel” Porker Lewis though the bars and holding him hostage.

Once back on the island Robotnik used a machine to merge the twelve chaos emeralds back into six, and furthermore, started to transfer the chaos energy into himself. Knuckles stopped this, by revealing that he himself had had the seventh Emerald all along. He then used the last emerald to strip Robotnik of the stolen chaos energy and send him back to the surface of Mobius. Sonic, and his side kick Tails, had walked in on this and asked Knuckles to join the fight against Robotnik. Knuckles refused, saying that Sonic's war was none of his concern, and it was his duty to guard the Island until his people returned. He did however come to Sonic’s aid when Robotnik attacked the hedgehog’s base, because it was his fault that Robotnik had found it. Afterwards he returned to the Island saying that they were even.

Yet Knuckles would be dragged into that war regardless as, Robotnik’s Death Egg was still in the Launch Base Zone waiting for Robotnik to repair it, something Sonic would not allow. The echidna was caught in the middle trying to keep them both off the island. Knuckles and Sonic were fighting each other as much as they were fighting Robotnik, which worked in the doctor’s favour; giving him the time he needed to fix the Death Egg. Yet when faced with the horrific weapon, Knuckles and Sonic finally managed to work together and beat him.
At the end of the fight Sonic had the Master Emerald and Robotnik had sworn to kill the population of the Emerald Hill Zone, who had sheltered Sonic in the past. So Knuckles was forced to make another deal. Sonic would give Knuckles the Master Emerald if Knuckles let the Emerald Hill Folk hide from Robotnik on the island, and Knuckles agreed.

Later Knuckles found himself in the Special Zone where he was attacked by the Chaotix. A team assembled by the Omni-Viewer, which was an intelligent computer who once enslaved by Robotnik. The team, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Mighty the Armadillo, and Charmy the Bee believed Knuckles was still working for Robotnik, But when the Omni-Viewer is kidnapped Knuckles proves his worth by helping them save him.

Knuckles found himself in another again when trying to save Tails from what he thought was a kidnapping attempt, only to find out the fox was being called back to his home, the Nameless Zone. After a hurried explanation Knuckles agrees to help Tails and the foxes of the nameless zone, even letting himself be called Sonic so Tails won't have to confess to everyone that he lied to his family about Sonic being his sidekick instead of the other way around. When Tails asked him why he explained that he was just thankful to have found a zone that didn't worship Sonic.

After helping Tails, and another fox, Morain, who followed the pair to the land beyond, and defeating the Evil One who ruled the land, Knuckles and Tails were to be sent back to the Floating Island. While Knuckles was glad that the misadventure was over he was not looking forward to returning to his duty, something had been lacking recently and he didn't know what it was. However he was the guardian and so stepped though the portal, only to find himself in Nautilus instead.

Character Personality:
Knuckles used to have a very narrow point of view. To him nothing, nothing was more important than the Floating Island and the Chaos Emeralds, even though he believed Robotnik's story of being a good guy he still never told him that he had the Grey Emerald all along.

Another obvious trait of Knuckles is his strong moral code. This is seen when he helps Robotnik after he first meets him, even when he has no reason to do so. Although this could be because Dr Robotnik is the first living thing he's ever met, which would also explain why he was so trusting, even after the doctor's betrayal he does not kill him despite knowing that Robotnik would kill him in a heartbeat given half the chance, when stripping him of the Chaos Emerald's power in “The Power of the Chaos Emeralds”. In fact Knuckles sends him home. He still doesn't kill him in a later story "Village of the Damned" even though Knuckles was very nearly burned alive by his brainwashed villagers.

What else Knuckles is --while on the island and after Robotnik's betrayal-- is very distrustful of everyone, with a few exceptions. One was Dr Zachary whom he trusted because he was an echidna, since Knuckles was so excited meeting one of his own kind at last that he didn't even think that he could be evil. After being betrayed by him Knuckles swears to be less trustful of even his own kind in the future.

However, before Robotnik's betrayal, and even now when off the island he is still rather naïve due to his lack of social interaction. This is most telling in “Village of the Damned” where anyone else would have been able to tell that the village was no a safe place to rest. Even as he jumps out of a window to save a girl, who's screaming for help no less, he's worried that he might be making a fool of himself and interrupting some kind of festival. (In his defence, the people taking the girl away are dressed up in festival costumes and the whole thing looked a little like a parade.)

Yet, in “The Good the Bad and the Echidna” Knuckles quickly picks up on who might be really trying to kill “The Good” and framing him for the failed attempts. This could be Knuckles becoming more socialised over time, or the fact he is in a prison cell kick-starts his usual distrustful behaviour

Knuckles also has his own sense of honour, he helped Sonic escape Robotnik in “Robotnik's Revenge” because it was his fault that the dictator had found his secret base under the Emerald Hill Zone. Most telling however is the fact that he allows the Emerald Hill Folk hide on his island, knowing Robotnik would never let them escape his wrath for sheltering Sonic in the first place. Although Sonic seems to have forced him into this, he doesn’t look annoyed at the sudden influx of people. This is a huge development for him, showing that he's almost as dedicated to his moral code as he is to his duty as Guardian.

This doesn't mean he's nice. He keeps throwing Sonic, and the other freedom fighters off his island. Even when he knows they are only there to fight Robotnik, right up until the final attack on the death egg and it continues even after he's become more tolerant of Sonic as he still dislikes his arrogance, impatience, and glory-seeking. The echidna doesn't keep his dislike a secret. Sometimes making jokes at the hedgehog's expense in a rare display of humour.

But having chosen a side he’s unerringly loyal to the people he’s thrown in with against Robotnik. In “The Revenge of Trogg” he plays along with Tails' deception; the fox told his family that he was the Hero of Mobius instead of Sonic, both because he liked finding a Zone that didn't worship Sonic and to keep Tails out of trouble.

In the end Knuckles can best be described as dedicated. While unlike Sonic in that he won't go looking for trouble, and in fact he prefers when things are quiet so he can have a peaceful life. Like Sonic he would rather die than fail in his duty. This is shown no less than three times in the comic, (Although I will be taking Knuckles from before this point in his timeline) such as in “Homecoming” when he chooses to stay on the island instead of gliding to safety, but was saved when he had last second brainwave. When he couldn't bring himself to destroy the last trace of the Kohenyu in “The Graveyard” in order to make a new Master Emerald even thought they would kill him, but thankfully they had a change of heart. Finally In the Chaos Arc The echidna ejects the emeralds from the Island in order to keep them from Chaos. This dooms the island to a watery grave, and is the closest Knuckles came to actually becoming suicidal instead of just allowing himself be killed. Amy Rose and Porker Lewis had to hit him over the head and drag him off the island before it crashed into the sea and sunk. While he does recover from that suicidal state, and even thanks Amy for knocking some sense into him, he becomes obsessed with getting the Emeralds back.

So even after all his character development and learning to understand and even befriend people, the core of his character will always be defined by his duty.

Powers and Abilities:
Knuckles abilities aren't really given a definite upper limit, it's mentioned more than once that he could glide the whole way down from the Island if he wanted to.

He has punched an entire section off the Floating Island once by punching a fault line. However, there is a cannon limit to his digging strength, while rock, earth and robots are no obstacle to him he was unable to dig his away out of his cell in “The Good the Bad and the Echidna” because of how thick the steel floor was.

He also doesn't seem to be bothered by the blistering heat of the Lava Reef Zone or the Freezing cold of the Ice Cap Zone, and he can take a lot of punishment before getting tired.

While Knuckles is not known for his brains he is not stupid. He doesn't tell Robotnik he has the “Lost” Emerald until he as all the emeralds in the comic (13 at that point.) He then uses the Grey Emerald to stop Robotnik's plans and remove him from the island this is a trick that actually worked becauseof Knuckles' naïvety.
That same naïvety means Knuckles is not good at spotting lies, however because of that people don't believe he can lie either. The best example is in the paragraph above where like lied to Robotnik, but he also tricked “The Bad” to confessing in “The Good the Bad and the Echidna.”

He can also be surprisingly empathic, twice he's talked his enemies down rather than beating them in a fight. In “The Graveyard” he surrendered to The Spirt of the Herd because he couldn't bring himself to destroy the last trace of the Kohenyu, the Spirit spared him. And in “Root's” he talked a forest of intelligent trees out of trying to kill everyone in revenge for the murder of the Elder tree.

Knuckles dedication to his Duty is also a strength, it's not very often he has to stop and ask himself if he's doing the right thing. (But when he does it can lead to near fatal hesitation)

(The following powers are not relevant to the game but I'm listing them here so if they do somehow become relevant it doesn't look like I'm pulling new powers out of thin air.)

When in possession of the Grey/Seventh/Control Emerald he can control the others, Transferring power to and from people (The Power of the Chaos Emeralds & Showdown) and Teleportation (The power of the Chaos Emeralds)
In “Showdown” he undone the damage Robotnik did while re-writing reality although it's never explained if Knuckles restored reality himself or if it was a side effect of stripping Robotnik of his power.

Another power that is not relevant in game is his Immortality, Knuckles will be mortal in Nautilus because the two things used to bring Knuckles back, The Guardian Emerald and the god Vichama will remain on Mobius. Also, at the point in canon I'm taking him from, he isn't even aware of his own Immortality.

Network:

[Knuckles sighs as he connects to the network, or he thinks he's connected to the network, Knuckles' still not quite sure how to use this gem he found, and figuring out as much as he has taken to long in his opinion. ]

Okay. I don't like stepping though portals and ending up in strange places, and it's been happening to me way to much recently. So I'll keep this short. Where's Tails? Where am I? And how to I get back to Mobius?

And if this is one of Robotnik's plots I'm less than impressed.

Third Person:
It had been a month. He had never been away from the island for so long before. Before he met Sonic he had never left his island at all. All thought of leaving had only been idle fancy never to be consider seriously. And yet here he was, a month after stumbling though the gate and he still hadn't gone back.

Knuckles was in the library reading what he could about bending, or anything else that caught his eye, reading was something he was used to, when living alone on an island reading was one of the things that kept a person sane. But none of the books he had come across head his attention, he closed the book in his hand, sick of reading the same line over and over but not being able to take the words in due to the question rattling around in his head; Why hadn't he gone home yet?

Yes he knew with the Island once more at full power both the Chaos Emeralds and the Emerald Hill folk were safe but that was no excuse to shirk his duty. And yet here he still was.

Because there was another Echidna here. Sonic insisted that Knuckles should avoid him, and Tails, of course, backed Sonic, never mind the fact that neither of his allies memories matched his or each others. Sonic still expected him to follow his lead. It made Knuckles wonder if this stranger in Sonic's form ever known any Knuckles. He certainly didn't know this Knuckles or he'd know why he had to talk to this, Doctor Finitevus, even if he wasn't to be trusted Knuckles had no choice.

Many people had said on the this place's network that they had been bought to this strange city for a reason.

Maybe his reason was to finally find out more about his people. Wasn't it his duty as guardian of what the Echidna left behind to take this chance no matter the risk? Choice made Knuckles reached for the gem he'd been given by the city to access the network with.

“Dr Finitevus, It's Knuckles you said you wanted to talk to me.”
